Genital Herpes

Christine Johnston, MD, MPH discusses genital herpes, a very challenging chronic STI caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 or HSV-2, which is often undiagnosed. She reviews the epidemiology, pathogenesis, transmission, and manifestations. Dr. Johnston then discusses the complexities of diagnosing and testing. She examines the three antiviral treatment options and how to use each based on whether a clinician is treating a first episode or using it for episodic or suppressive therapy.
