The adult crab louse (Phthirus pubis) is 1 to 2 mm in length and has 6 legs; when viewed through a magnifying glass, they appear tan to grayish-white in color. The two front legs stand out as much larger and look like the pincer claws of a crab. Some have described the pubic louse as resembling a miniature crab, hence the name crabs.
