A 31-year-old woman presents with a 3-day history of vaginal itching and new white vaginal discharge. She was recently diagnosed with HIV (initial CD4 count 152 cells/mm³ and HIV RNA 58,320 copies/mL). One week ago, she started on antiretroviral therapy. After evaluation in the clinic, she is diagnosed with vulvovaginal candidiasis. She states she had one similar episode of vulvovaginal candidiasis about 5 years prior. She is not pregnant and does not have diabetes.
